5:07 pm
i got like several broken tree branches. >> reporter: that kind of damage has kept pepco crews busy since the storm passed. there were more than 60,000 outages in prince george's county at the height of the storm. >> the damage here is similar to what we just experienced. a lot of heavy trees fell on to wires. i haven't seen as many snap poles. >> reporter: pepco's crews surveyed the damage and said 100 crews were standing by and 100 more were brought in from other places. people like he think he will say this is all testing their patience. >> we have no choice. what can we do? we have no -- >> reporter: and we've heard from pepco that they expect to be able to have power back on to almost everybody in their service area by midnight tonight. there may be a few people who will ling entire tomorrow without electricity. as far as the clean-up goes, when you look at the debris behind me and what you've seen around other parts of the county, that will take quite a while to get fixed.

5:18 pm
>> the frustration, it is beyond frustration as to why someone would want to do this to the community. it is about the community impact. >> reporter: authorities say each time these vandals have come inside the park, the alarm system wasn't tripped. what they believe is happening is that these vandals are sneaking up through the tree line and they're boosting each other up over the eight-foot tall fence. if you'll notice the last time they came in, the top is still a little bent. the water park will not comment about what video surveillance is in place but says, since the first incident, a full review of the security measures has been done. >> once we set somebody here at night, there is no fool proof way to keep people from getting over. what we've done since the last issue, is if that person wants to cam back and try, they'll see what enhancements we have put in place. >> reporter: until the person is caught, they are asking the local communicate to keep its eyes open and call police if you see someone suspicious. >> despite all the recent

the unemployment rate is not getting any better and not getting any worse. the jobless rate held steady at 9.5% in july. that's the word from the new labor department report. the economy lost a total of 131,000 jobs last month. mostly because those temporary census jobs had ended. president obama used a local business to show off a bright spot in this report. this morning he visited gegberg signs. private employers added only 71,000 jobs in july. not nearly enough to reduce the unemployment rate but it was the seventh straight month of gains. so joining us to discuss the big issues this week, "meet the press" monitor, david gregory. it remained at 9.5%, the same as last month. on the other hand, more than 14 million people were looking for work in july.
5:37 pm
this is a big problem for the president. >> the 71,000 private sector jobs, this still way too slow. alan greenspan said on "meet the press" last sun, there is tragic unemployment even though we see limited economic recovery. it is anemic, fragile, way too slow. the government recognizes more has to be done. there aren't a lot of options from the government perspective, but what is that it will get businesses feeling less cautious? more confident about recovery? it is very difficult. one thing that is a big problem. and with fanny mae and freddie mac in our area, the housing prices. if people are still underwater, that will influence whether people stay in their jobs and have money to spend. >> bp, let's look at the oil spill. they've finally look like they're getting a permanent cap on that gusher. >> right. >> what is the federal government's role now? and is this taking some of the pressure off the obama administration that we don't have this thing opened and gushing on television?
5:38 pm
>> the news psych sl short. the attention spans. are it is a big deal they have plugged the hole. don't forget, the plays national address from the oval office because of the level of this crisis. a big question now in terms of federal government, are they going to pursue charges against bp? was there gross negligence? if they pursue the charges and they're found liable, they can be responsible for up to $20 billion in payments. a lot of liability now. enter the lawyers, enter the litigation. this will go on outside of public view but it become very important on this question. will bp really be held accountable going forward? >> and what do you have coming up? >> we'll follow up with these questions of carol brown, the adviser to the president. and i'll have top republican in the house john boehner on what the republicans would do if they come into power at the end of the mid-term race, to get people back to work.
5:39 pm
>> david gregory and you can see "meet the press" on sunday at 10:30. with americans just coming out of the worst recession in a general vague shrk congress even take a recess? bp says it has capped the well but the battle is not oh. school administrators say they have found a way to get students to pay attention to school. they take away their car keys. the school wants the power to decide if teens can have a driver's license or a work permit. the board admits this is drastic but they stay truancy is the worst in the country. no word on when or if this graduation priority act will be passed. up next on news4 at 5:00, do ufos really exist? the new evidence that could finally reveal if there is life on another planet. women love it. lions love it as well. what is it that makes the animals obsessed with calvin
